Duffner hopes to make a difference for Bucs

October 18, 2018 general

Thursday, 4 a.m. As the mire has spread for the Tampa Bay Bucs, he has been a voice in the room. He was part of the coaching staff that has led to an abysmal defense over the past two seasons. He was part of the planning that failed to stop opponents. He was part of […]

Looking back on last weekend in college football

October 18, 2018 College Sports in Florida

Thursday, 3 a.m. 5 Observations 1. When USF has the ball, I think of the possibilities. I think of the weapons. I think in a hurry, because the Bulls may soon be kicking the extra point. But when USF’s opponent has the ball, I wonder if this team can avoid losing three times this year. […]

Bolts’ Johnson scores a hat trick in victory

October 17, 2018 general

Wednesday, 4 a.m. The first goal was a gimmie putt. Tyler Johnson took a perfect pass from young Mathieu Joseph and simply steered it into the net. Of the 110 goals Johnson had scored before that one, most of them were more difficult. The third goal was a layup. That goal, the one that put […]

Looking back on the Bucs’ loss to Atlanta

October 16, 2018 general

5 Observations 1. The first thought I had upon hearing that the Bucs had fired defensive coordinator Mike Smith was simple. “… and who else?” The Bucs won’t get better merely by firing their coordinator, but how in the heck could you justify keeping him? If Smith was a player, he would have been cut […]

Sizzle turns to fizzle as Bucs lose third game

October 15, 2018 general

Monday, 4 a.m. It was exciting, all right. That much is obvious. It was wild, and it was wacky, and it would have made all of the highlight shows. It had razzle, and it had dazzle, and it had the derring-do born of desperation. But was it really the Bucs’ best chance to win? Really? […]

Random thoughts: Cue the exit music, please

October 14, 2018 general

Why is it that when I watch the USF Bulls play, I hear the theme song from Mission Impossible? — That’s okay, though. When I see the Bucs play pass defense, I hear Yackety Sax. — Bucs’ defensive coordinator Mike Smith is right when he suggests that the sky is not falling. If it were, […]

Sunday, 3:30 a.m. Now, that’s the team you came to know and love a year ago. Welcome back, boys. After two games where they absolutely could not score, the Tampa Bay Lighting exploded Saturday night with eight in an 8-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Amalie Arena. The players had sworn that it […]

State roundup: Gators come from behind to beat Vandy

October 14, 2018 College Sports in Florida

Sunday, 3 a.m. They are not a perfect team. They are still learning the offense, still learning the defense and still learning how to win. Still, for the Florida Gators, this will do. Eighteen points down. On the road. Sputtering mightily. The Gators overcame it all Saturday in a 37-27 win over Vanderbilt. It was […]

Bulls somehow pull out a close one against Tulsa

October 13, 2018 College Sports in Florida

Saturday, 3 a.m. For their next trick, the USF Bulls will wear a straight jacket, and they’ll be blindfolded, and they ‘ll be immersed upside down into a water tank. Also, they will be behind by a couple of touchdowns. And then we will see if they can pull out another win. The escape artists […]
