Friday, 3 a.m. The new season is open. The nets, however, remained closed. Once again, the Tampa Bay Lightning struggled to score Thursday night, seeing a 1-0 lead evaporate in a 4-1 loss to Vancouver in the second half of the third period. The Canucks, who had struggled to start their season, scored two goals […]

The Predictions: USF to win another close game

October 12, 2018 general

Friday, 2 a.m. Give a little credit to the USF Bulls. In the middle of a game of football, the team finds a little time to play with fire. They flirted with disaster against Georgia Tech. They wooed it against Illinois. They whispered sweet nothings against East Carolina. And darned if they didn’t go down […]

Can Bucs withstand Atlanta’s passing attack?

October 12, 2018 general

Friday, 1 a.m. I know. Let’s do something for the quarterbacks! Why, just last month, someone made a tackle. Someone else forced a fumble. I know. Let’s pass a few more rules. We’ll legalize holding, and we won’t allow defensive backs to beat up receivers, and we’ll throw a flag if anyone gets within five […]

October 11, 2018 general

Thursday, 4 a.m. Four. It doesn’t sound like a lot. Four. Heck, there were that many Beatles. That many seasons in a year. That many leaves on some clover That many Cartwrights (original issue). Four. Four is a start. Four is a solid month. Four is a full set of Horsemen. And in the case […]

Ranking the all-time Bucs by their positions

October 10, 2018 general

Wednesday, 4 a.m. Around here, excellence may run fast. It does not, however, run deep. Frankly speaking, the Tampa Bay Bucs have had only a smattering of stars in its history. For every Brad Johnson there is a Josh Freeman. For every James Wilder, there is a Doug Martin. For every Jimmie Giles, there is […]

Fresh start: Winston re-enters the lineup against Falcons

October 9, 2018 general

Tuesday, 4 a.m. The running game is in quicksand. A month into the season, and it’s going nowhere. For the most part, however, that’s staying the same. The secondary is running in circles. Four different teams have taken their turns shredding it. Still, while the playing time might be re-disbursed, that’s staying the same. The […]

October 8, 2018 general

Monday, 4 a.m. A horror show never changes. You watch it through your fingers. Your palms get sweaty. You brace for the next bloody scene. You prepare to scream. And so it goes with the secondary of the Tampa Bay Bucs. For a decade, they have been a nightmare. It doesn’t matter who plays. It […]

Cronkrite keeps running and running in Bulls’ win

October 7, 2018 general

Sunday, 2 a.m. They are a hard team to figure out, these USF Bulls. They are explosive, and sometimes, it as if they are playing with explosives. They eat up yardage in huge chunks, and they give it up the same way. They are near the top 25 in the college polls, and sometimes, they […]

Random thoughts: Welcome back, Lightning

October 7, 2018 College Sports in Florida

Sunday, 4 a.m. I don’t know about you, but I thought it was cool to see the Lightning return Saturday night. Let’s see: Kucherov scored the winner in a shootout. Vasilevskiy was solid in goal. The team won a comeback. Yeah, those were the Lightning, all right. — Now that Richie Incognito is a memory, […]

Lightning start season with shootout victory

October 7, 2018 general

Saturday, 3:30 a.m. As games go, this one was the kind of contest that warned you of the journey ahead. It wasn’t always smooth, and it wasn’t ever dominant. It was filled with hairpin turns and bumps in the road. The team started slowly, and only later did it find its mojo. On the other […]
