Quite simply, Gary Shelton is one of the best columnists in America. Notice I didn't say sports columnists. Gary's columns may start with sports but by the end, he has usually told you another great, soulful, funny, touching story about the human condition. If I was stuck on an island with only a laptop, unlimited power and a reliable internet connection but access to only one writer, it would be Gary. I know I could count on him to tell me the important stuff and I know he would make me laugh, which I would clearly need to do under those circumstances.

There is no columnist in the country who strings together words and thoughts more beautifully than Gary Shelton. He writes with wonderful perspective and grace and strikes the perfect tone.

Gary has been a close friend going back to the days we both worked at the Miami Herald in the 1980s. Then friendship on my end comes with great respect and admiration for a writer who is true to his craft. Invest a few minutes into one of his columns and you'll see what I mean.
