It was over now, and once again, Baker Mayfield had survived.
All of the mistakes had been forgiven. The botched field goal and the blocked punt and the blown coverage and the lost lead and the patchwork offensive line and the linebackers lost in coverage and Lavonte David's dropped interception and Charlie Heck getting beaten for a crucial sack and the rest of it.
But this is what Mayfield does, and this is who he is. He scrambles around and he takes hits and directs key drives and makes plays. He finishes bruised and battered.
And he wins.
Once again, Mayfield led the Bucs on a last-minute scoring drive to lead the Bucs to a 20-19 come-from-behind victory. The Bucs are now 2-0 on the season.
Mayfield led the Bucs 80 yards in 2:04 for the winning touchdown, a two-yard plunge by Rashaad White. On the drive, Mayfield completed a 12-yard pass to Bucky Irving, a no gain to Irving, a 15-yard run on fourth-and-10, an eight-yard pass to Cade Otton, a 22-yard pass to Irving, a five-yard pass to Irving and an 11-yard pass to Mike Evans and a five-yard pass to Otton. In all, he threw for 63 yards and ran for 15 on the winning drive.
It was Mayfield's 12th fourth-quarter comeback and 14th game-winning drive.
The Bucs' defense played well again after another shaky start. They had a goal line stand in the fourth period and forced a field goal after a blocked punt. However, Nick Chubb ran 25 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 2:10 left to play.
Along the way, it seemed Bucs' errors might doom Tampa Bay. Chase McLaughlin boinked another field goal. Punter Riley Dixon had a punt blocked. The punt coverage team gave up a 53-yard return.
Still, there were stars. Irving ran for 71 yards and White for 65 as the Bucs piled up 169 yards rushing.
The Bucs are 2-0 for the fifth straight season.
Tampa Bay is home on Sunday against the New York Jets at 1 p.m.
