So is Tyler Wells playing for the Tampa Bay Rays because of his bat?

Wells, normally a good-field, little-hit infielder for the Rays, had a reserve of fortune in Sunday afternoon’s 6-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Wells knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth with a single to right, his second hit of the game. For a guy hitting .211, it was a pretty good day.

In the field, it was another matter. Walls made two errors, and on another play, he overthrew first base on a  double-play attempt. Normally a solid fielder, it was stunning to see his play turn sloppy.

For the Rays, however, it worked out with a three-run ninth, allowing the team to salvage one game of their series. The Rays had 13 hits, but they still had just two runs after seven innings.

Rene Pinto had a home run for the Rays. Brandon Lowe had three hits.

Rookie Taj Bradley started for the Rays, and allowed just three hits over his five innings. He did walk five, however. Cleveland was two-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

The Rays now play against Boston, starting today at 4:10 p.m. at Fenway Park. Aaron Civale will start for the Rays against Brayan Bello.
