Two games in, and the question about Jalon Daniels deserves an update:
Is this guy going to settle for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, or is he aiming even. higher.
Daniels, an undrafted rookie, was the star for the second straight week in Saturday night's 16-15 preseason victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Daniels led the Bucs to two touchdows and a field goal in the second half as the Bucs overcame a 15-7 deficit to win. For the night, he hit nine of 14 passes for 71 yards. It might merit notice that Connor Bazelak, last week's starter, did not play.
Of course, it was a preseason game, which means you only saw brief apperances by the players who matter most. Still, there are some takeways from the game.
Quarterback: Daniels is the new toy in town, so he's going to get most of the conversation today. But Jake Browning was eight of 11 for 84 yards. He did not lead his team to a score, however. Baker Mayfield played long enough to hit two of four passes for short yardage. Grade: B.
Running back: Sean Tucker ran for 23 yards on five carries and score the game-winning touchdown. Overall, the Bucs were pretty good, but not great. Grade: C+.
Secondary: Another area of concern. The Chiefs' backups hit 23 of 35 passes. Grade: D.
Offensive line: The Bucs averaged four yards a carry but gave up three sacks (all against Browning). Grade: C.
Defensive line: The Chiefs didn't run for a lot, either. They had 104 yards on 22 carries. Grade: B.
Receivers: No one is risking an injury here. The mainstays didn't play. Grade: C.
Field goal defense: Okay, that's a joke. But Harrison Butker was a star. He hit from 69 yards, 58 yards and 45 yards. Grade: F.
The Bucs play at Jacksonville on Friday night at 7 p.m.
