Officially, the win went to Ian Seymour. And after seven innings of four hit baseball with no earned runs, he's got a case.
But, really, the win ought to go to Chandler Simpson, don't you think?
Simpson took over the Rays' 2-1 victory over Toronto Wednesday night. The Rays' rookie had three hits, including the game-winner. He had two doubles. He took a potential three-run homer away from Alejandro Kirk. He increased his batting average to .296.
There was no word if he made the hot dogs, too.
It has been a strong first campaign for Simpson, the Rays' leadoff hitter. He has 42 stolen bases and 24 RBI. It was his 29th multi-hit game of the season.
What was his best at-bat? You could argue that it was his leadoff double to left to start the game (he scored). Or was it his double to right in the fifth? Maybe it was his single up the middle to drive in the winning run in the seventh.
Yandy Diaz had two hits to drive his average up to .299.
Seymour was sharp, allowing four hits and only one unearned run in his start to improve his record to 4-2. The Rays' bullpen (Edwin Uceta and Pete Fairbanks), threw two perfect innings. Fairbanks earned his 27th save.
The Rays struggled to score off of Jays' pitcher Kevin Gausman, getting one in the first. They scored their winning run against Yariel Rodriguez.
The Rays are 74-78 on the season.
The Rays and Jays play again today at 1:10 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field. Shane Baz will start for the Rays against Chris Bassitt.
