You can blame Garrett Cleavinger, who had an awful inth inning, for the 2-1 loss the Tampa Bay Rays suffered at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies. And it’s true. Cleavinger wasn’t good.
But in the end, the Rays scored just one run — a homer by Brandon Lowe that slipped out of the glove of Julien Rojas in the ninth inning. They were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
The Rays had eight hits, but for the most part, they were controlled by Philadelphia pitcher Cristopher Sanchez, who gave up four hits in six shutout innings.
Cleavinger came in with on out in the ninth. He allowed three singles and a walk, including a single to Kody Clemens in the ninth. Cleavinger is now 7-4 on the season.
The teams play again today at 6:40 p.m. Taj Bradley will pitch for the Rays against Ranger Suarez.
