It remains to be seen if the University of Miami indeed opened the door to its past greatness Sunday night.

If the Hurricanes did, however, doesn't it figure that this would be the matchup that made sense?

The Canes beat sixth-ranked Notre Dame Sunday night, 27-24 in Miami to get its season off to a flying start. Carter Davis hit a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 remaining to snap a tie.

Miami starts most seasons with lip service to past glories. Still, there is something about Miami vs. Notre Dame to invite the memories.

Miami had led 21-7 at one point, but the Irish came back behind C.J. Carr, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

But the Hurricanes held on at the end, sacking Carr on the game's final two plays.

The game was the debut of quarterback transfer Carson Beck, who hit 20 of 30 passes for 205 yards and two scores. Carr had 19 of 30 for 221 yards.

Miami's Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for 66 yards and Malachi Toney caught six passes for 82 yards.

Notre Dame got 45 yards rushing from Jadarian Price. the Irish’s Eli Raridon caught five passes for 97 yards.

Miami is home against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
