The mystifying slide of Shane Baz continues.
Baz lost his third game in his last four starts Sunday, struggling in a 5-1 loss to the Miami Marins. It was the first series the Marlins have won against the Rays since the middle of the 2018 season.
The loss was particularly tough on Baz, who started the season 3-0. In his last four starts, Baz has given up 21 earned runs and 30 hits. In his only win since April, the Rays scored 11 runs.
It wasn’t as if the Rays’ offense did its job, either. The Rays managed just three hits, only two of them against starting pitcher Cal Quantrill, who entered with a 6.53 ERA.
Quantrill had an immaculate inning (nine pitches, all strikes) in the fourth inning. It was the second in Marlins’ franchise history. It was the 116th such inning in baseball history.
Still, the Rays had a chance early. They loaded the bases with no one out in the third and a 1-0 lead but failed to score. Brandon Lowe lined out to center field and Junior Caminero hit into his 12th double play of the season.
The Rays return home to face to face the Houston Astros at 7:05 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field. Ryan Pepiot will start for the Rays against Colton Gordon.
