The Tampa Bay Rays are in a hurry to make something happen.
Turns out, they might be in too big a hurry.
The Rays lost their second straight game Friday night, 3-2 to the Cleveland Guardians. The Rays rallied to tie the game, but it got away from closer Pete Fairbanks in the ninth.
In the end, baserunning doomed the Rays. In the bottom of the seventh, Jake Mangum was out (by far) when he tried to steal home with the bases loaded. In the eighth, Yandy Diaz ended the inning by being thrown out stealing at second. Diaz has only three steals all season.
Perhaps it was because of the suddenly quiet offense that Rays' manager Kevin Cash felt he had to make something happen. The Rays managed just six hits.
The biggest was a solo homer by Josh Lowe, his 10th of the year. Tristan Gray doubled off the right field wall for one of his two hits.
Fairbanks had a frustrating night in taking the loss. He gave up a single and walk on a close pitch. He came back to get two outs, but Steven Kwan had an infield single to drive in the winning run. Fairbanks is 4-5 on the season.
The Rays wrap up their four game series against Cleveland today at 12:10 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field. Drew Rasmussen will start for the Rays against Parker Messick.
