Rays down to a surprising trio to manage

in Tampa Bay Rays

No Dave Martinez.

No Charlie Montoyo.

No Barry Larkin.

No fooling?

The Tampa Bay Rays whittled their list of candidates to three finalists Friday evening, and if you successfully picked the last three standing, then the team should hire you immediately. Because you know what the front office is thinking, which evidently, no one else in Tampa Bay does.

The Rays are now down to Kevin Cash, and Don Wakamatsu, and Raul Ibanez, in whatever order, to become their new Joe Maddon. Which means, frankly, that someone must have an extra sheet in their resume that the rest of us don’t know about.

I’m thinking Raul. No experience, but a bright, bright guy who will learn fast. Not from the “pitching/defense” side of the game, we’ve done that to death. A hitter who understands hitters and hitting. Not a “former bench coach” or a “former catcher”, we’ve done that, too. We’ve got Hickey and crew to maintain the best of the current culture, and we need a manager that brings in something else. IMHO Raul has IT! He’s a long-term star as a manager. And to top it off, he is multilingual, which is something I think is or will be almost mandatory for a manager. Wakamatsu is the most like JoeM of the three, Cash is the most like JoeM at a younger age. Raul is the breath of fresh air we need.
