Looking back at the week of college football

5 Observations

1. It didn't take Willie Taggart long to run out of friends, did it? These days, they won't serve him in local restaurants. Still, his career is three games old. The disappointing thing with the Noles is all those four- and five-star athletes on the field.

2. After flirting with losing for two straight weeks -- and coming from behind to win against mediocre teams from major conferences, the USF Bulls should start a monthlong run Saturday night. Once they stop taking target practice at their toes, USF should be okay. At least until Houston

3. If you want to know why Jeremy Pruitt is the head coach in Tennessee, just go back a year. The Volts allowed a 63-yard catch as time ran out from Feleipe Franks to Tyrie Cleveland. That'll get a guy into the used car business.

4. If FAU has a puncher's chance to knock off UCF this weekend, it's unheralded running back Devin Singletary. Singletary, three games into his junior season, is a load. He's already scored 52 rushing touchdowns (32 of them last year) and has more than 3,000 yards rushing.

5. It's interesting that the University of Miami players are defending quarterback Malik Rosier. The great quarterbacks never need defending.

They Said It

"I just like the resiliency of our players and how they continue to have that attitude of, 'We're not going to lose this game. We're going to find a way to go win the game. That's what we were able to do."

-- Charlie Strong, USF coach

"Our fans have every right to have high expectations of our program and I can assure you that no one has higher expectations than I do. Our fans, students, alumni, former players, deserve a team that plays better than what we have so far this season."

-- Willie Taggart, FSU coach

“I told him this, if he (Feleipe Franks) goes out there and throws a bunch of picks he throws a bunch of picks. If he pouts about it and whines about it and stops taking coaching and drops his head I might pull him but I’m not going to pull him for throwing picks or making mistakes. That’s our coaching. That’s teaching and we need to coach and teach that. It’s his confidence level and how he learns and grows and carries himself as a quarterback is most important.”

-- Dan Mullen, UF coach

“They (UCF's Knights) obviously go extremely fast and he’s a really special player. They’re really good all around. Height, weight, speed, the players, the size of the guys. It’s like playing an SEC opponent.”

-- Lane Kiffin, FAU coach

“It’s like I told the team, there’s going to be a lot of talk about Coach Davis. And I told the guys, ‘This man is a great coach and a great person and they did great things for Miami, the University of Miami football program.’ I said, ‘But we gotta make it about this game and this scheme and this preparation and we gotta treat it like any other game and make sure we’re focused on the right things.’’’

-- Mark Richt, Miami coach
