Winston led his team from behind for the first time.

Winston led his team from behind for the first time.

Thursday, 6 a.m.

Time is running out. The crowd is loud. The opposition is energized.

It is hot. You are tired. You have been knocked down all afternoon long.

Your best receiver is hurt. The field is long. You are behind.

In other words, it is time to be a quarterback.

Forget all the other ways to judge a quarterback. This isn't about how pretty a spiral is. This isn't about how quick your feet are. This isn't even about well you protect the ball.

This is about the fourth quarter. This is about winning the game. This is making sure a lousy novel turns out right in the end. Just that.

Quarterbacks will tell you. There is a time, in the fourth quarter, when a team has a chance to win, when the best of them emerge.
