Why does Roger Goodell need the grief?

He makes plenty of money. He gets good seats to all the nice games. He attends the fanciest parties. His name is on all the footballs. The owners love him because he turns their nickels into quarters.

So why isn't it enough?

Why on earth does Goodell continue to slog through the muck like a pioneer sheriff, arresting, judging and carrying out his own sentences? Why is he so aggressive, so defiant, so imperious? Does he think that being commissioner is only worth it if he gets to be a hanging judge? Does he like life in the trenches? Does he like being admonished in court for “several significant legal deficiencies?''
