Rose remains outside the Hall, where he belongs

Tuesday, 6 a.m.

It would be easy to cave on Pete Rose.

As a nation, we love to forgive celebrities, don't we? And so we can remember the spunky player we cheered. We can notice the time that has passed. We can talk about a game — and other games — that has gone so wrong in so many other areas. Hey, Pete didn't murder anyone, right?

We can shrug about gambling, a vice that a lot of people seem to consider as harmless as playing the lottery. We can talk about the price he has paid. We can wonder if his banishment should be eternal.

And, given all of that, we could put an arm around the aging Rose
