Random thoughts: Manziel to be forgotten

in general, Tampa Bay Bucs, Tampa Bay Lightning

Congratulations to Tony Dungy, who joins Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp in the Hall of Fame. Canton just became a nicer place.

– So, who do you like to reach the World Series CXII this year?

– Have you ever seen a guy work harder not to be a success than Johnny Manziel? As long as a lampshade fits on his head, he doesn't need a helmet.

– Michael Sam says that the new coach of the Los Angeles Rams should be Caitlyn Jenner. That was a joke, only without the humor.

– I wonder what Warren Sapp thinks about Louisville's basketball team being stopped by, not a hook shot, but a hooker.

– Turns out, there is gambling on the Love Boat. According to the New Yor Daily News, the following former celebrities pick Carolina today: Jerry Mathers, George Foreman, Richard Kline, Butch Patrick, Cheryl Tiegs and Toni Basil.

– It's a coach-quarterback league. So how come a coach who wins only one Super Bowl (Tony Dungy) is underachieving, but a quarterback (Brett Favre) isn't.

– True story: Dungy was talking about a victory once and how his players were ticked off by some things that had been written in the newspapers. I cracked "maybe I should have gotten a game ball." Dungy grinned and cracked back. "You got some votes."

– The following celebs pick Denver: Cyndi Lauper, Doris Roberts, Mario Andretti, Dawn Wells, Florence Henderson, Kim Carnes and Jack Nicklaus.

– If Kevin Kiermaier keeps eating 35-ounce steaks, doughnuts and mashed potatoes, there won't be room for two other outfielders.

– Cool that Eddie DeBartolo got into the Hall, too. For an owner, he was an impact player.

– I see where a robot has replicated Tiger Woods' hole-in-one from the TPC Scottsdale. It's been so long since since Woods was successful that I thought the robot who played Tiger would be Gort from The Earth Stood Still.

– I still don't agree with the pick of the Rams' Todd Gurley over Jamies Winston for rookie of the year. Gurley had one 100-yard game in his last eight, and for the year, he had five games of fewer than 50 yards. Winston threw for more than 4,000 yards. Not close.

– Like a lot of quarterbacks, it doesn't bother me a lick that Terrell Owens has to wait to get into the Hall of Fame.

– Joe Montana has a long list of physical ailments at age 59. But you know what? Down by three with 92 yards to go, I'd bet he can still bring his team from behind. Who's going to stop him?

– Is Eddie Lacy trying to eat his way onto the offensive line? Or just an offensive lineman?

– Roger Goodell says he hopes his franchises stay where they are. But, just in case, perhaps the Jaguars should get used to tea and biscuits and driving on the wrong side of the road.

– Would Johnny Manziel embrace rehab more if they named it after a fraternity? Say “Drinka Beta Keg?"

– Don't you wonder what Lovie Smith sees when he watches the Super Bowl? He fired Ron Rivera, remembered, then lost to him four straight times as a Buc coach. He who last laughs four times laughs pretty loudly.

– Okay. You know when you're getting encouragement from Charlie Sheen, as is Manziel, you're scraping the bottom.

– Pete Rose is now hawking a sports betting rap. Hey, Pete. I-Don't-Get-It is on line one.

– The quickest argument you can get into in Tampa Bay, all these years later, is which coach was more important to the Bucs' Super Bowl. Jon Gruden coached the team that year, and he did a great job. But Dungy built most of that great defense that defined that team. I'd say Dungy, but the biggest accomplishment was Gruden's.

– Bill Romanowski, one of the dirtiest players in NFL history, says he knows how he'd stop Cam Newton. He says he'd wrap his hands around Newton's neck and choke him. Of course, this isn't J.J. Stokes that Romanowski is threatening. Frankly, bet on Newton.

– Joe Namath guaranteed one Super Bowl. Tuah, an orangutan from a Utah zoo, is trying to go to 9-0 by picking Carolina. And he didn't even try to kiss Suzie Kolber.
