Random Thoughts: If only Goodell had evidence

Hi, I'm Roger Goodell. And just think how badly I would have thrown the book at Tom Brady is there was, you know, any evidence. Even Ben Affleck makes more sense than I do, although I would have been better in Daredevil.

– Headline in the Chicago Sun-Times: Is Joe Maddon's schtick getting old? I know Joe played three pitchers in the field the other night, but wasn't that a standing headline during Maddon's time with the Rays? The answer? No, it isn't.

– Congratulations to Denver's Von Miller. According to Wikipedia, he now has the 89th most lucrative contract in sports.

– The annual wife-carrying competition begins on Oct. 8. How many people want Brent Grimes to compete?

– I see where Dwight Howard started crying when introduced by the Hawks' management. How long do  you think it will be before the tears' swap faces?

– Just wondering: Who is more likely to win next? Tiger Woods or Joe Montana?

– In a state where the Bucs have Jameis Winston, the Jags have Blake Bortles and the Dolphins have Ndamukong Suh, the top-selling jersey, according to NFLshop.com, is Von Miller's. Just asking, but does Miko Grimes have a jersey?

– Is it just me, or have the Rays been eliminated through 2027?

– The Sporting News ranks former Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jackson as the most overrated Buc since the year 2000. Hah. Jackson isn't even the most overrated Dexter Jackson the Bucs have had (that would be the second-round receiver who never caught a pass).

– In a way, you could call Darryl Strawberry an outfielder. Considering what he said this week, however, you could also consider him a closer.

-- USA Today ranks the coach-quarterback combo of Dirk Koetter and Jameis Winston only 27th, which is behind Doug Pederson and Sam Bradford and -- alert Miko -- Adam Gase and Ryan Tannehill. They're also behind Chip Kelly and Blaine Gabbert, for some reason.

– I don't know what your under-over is for Jimmy Garappolo, but I say he goes 3-1 while quarterbacking the New England Patriots. Still, Garappolo did threw for all of two touchdowns, nine interceptions and 797 yards passing against Jacksonville State, Southern Missouri, Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee Tech during his first four games in college.

– I checked the standings this week, and the Rays were fourth... in the Southern League.

– I don't know much about the movie Suicide Squad, but if the actress who plays Harley Quinn leaves, I think Hope Solo would be perfect.

– USA Today's For the Win lists four last-place teams that could win their divisions in 2016. Yes, the Bucs are one of them.

– Pete Rose doesn't think David Ortiz has enough hits to make the Hall of Fame. This is too easy, but does he want to bet?

– Didn't Ronda Rousey used to fight or something?

– Could this Rays' season be a plot to make St. Petersburg not fight as hard to keep the team? I mean, the Pelicans may have been better.

– There isn't a current Tampa Bay Bucs' on USA Today's list of the 100 most important people in the NFL. But it's kind of an old home week with former Lightning CEO Tod Leiweke 13th, former general manager Rich McKay 31, former coach Jon Gruden 57th and former coach Tony Dungy 74th. Nah, I wouldn't trade the lot for Jameis Winston, either.
