Can Denver's superb defense stop Carolina quarterback Cam Newton in the Super Bowl?

Howard Powders

That's the matchup that counts, isn't it? The Broncos defense is the primary reason that Denver made it to the Super Bowl in the first place.

The Broncos were first in the NFL in defense this year, leading Seattle by eight yards and third-place Houston by almost 30. They led the league in yards allowed per play by a full half-yard (over Carolina).

My gut feeling is that, yes, they can slow Cam down significantly and turned this is into a defensive battle -- Carolina's defense isn't bad, either. I don't think the Broncos will completely snuff Cam, but they are capable of holding Newton and the Panthers to 16 points or so. Will that be enough so that Denver can pull the game out? Maybe.

I know this: If Newton has the ball in his hands with 1:30 to play at the Denver 10, I think he'll get it into the end zone.
