The Tampa Bay Rays certainly know the sting of one-run losses. They've suffered 19 of them this year, which leads the major leagues.

This one, however, was worse.

This time, the Rays saw a 4-0 lead dwindle away in a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Houston Astros. The Astros won their 12th straight game with the comeback, capped when Alex Bregman doubled off Sergio Romo with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth.

Tampa Bay collected four runs and three hits in the first three innings. After that, however, they were shut down, getting only one other hit and no other runs.

The Rays used seven relief pitchers in the game.

“It’s a tough one,  no doubt," said Rays' manager Kevin Cash. "We sold out to try to win a ballgame. "

The loss widened the gap of how the Rays have done against the good and bad of baseball. They are 21-9 against teams under .500 and 12-30 against teams over it.

The Rays jumped to a lead when Wilson Ramos hit a two-run homer in the first inning. In the third, the Rays made it 4-0 on a two-run single by Joey Wendle.

After falling behind, however, Gerrit Cole was sharp, and the Astros chipped away. He went seven innings and gave up only three hits and struck out eight.

The Rays play again tonight against Houston. Blake Snell pitches for the Rays against Justin Verlander. The game begins at 8:10 p.m.
