Muschamp runs out of time, out of work

The school tried being patient. It tried being reasonable. It tried being fair.

It tried giving the condemned man a chance.

In the end, none of it could save Will Muschamp.

Even the Gators reached the inescapable conclusion that Muschamp was in over his head. His final effort against South Carolina finally coached him to the unemployment line. In the end, even Jeremy Foley had no choice but to come to the same sad conclusion that most of its fans had come to long ago.

It is time for someone new.

It is time for someone else.

There were too many Saturdays when the Gators underachieved. There were too many Saturdays filled with mediocrity. There were too many Saturdays when ordinary teams had their fun at the expense of the Gators. It had become a broken record, a coach afraid of his own offense, a coach who could not measure up to the considerable standards of a program.

Muschamp simply was not ready for this level of coaching. He tried hard. He meant well. But as coaches went, he was Jeff Driskell. He just wasn't good enough.

And so the time has come to start the search for a new coach.

Maybe this time, they should look for a man who has been a head coach before.
