David expects the 2016 Buc defense to be legendary

in general, NFL, Tampa Bay Bucs

How good can the 2016 Bucs' defense be?

How good can the 2016 Bucs' defense be with David (54), Gerald McCoy (93)?

Friday, 6 a.m.

Better than the Monsters of the Midway.

Better than the Steel Curtain.

Better than the Fearsome Foursome and the No-Name Defense and the Purple People Eaters and the Doomsday Defense. Better than the best of the Bucs or the best of the Ravens or the best of the Raiders. Better than anyone.

If you believe Lavonte David, that's the possibility for the Tampa Bay Bucs. They could be, David says, the best team in history.

Really.

"I think we can be the best defense ever, to be honest,” David said. “I'm going to go out there and say it,

Mind you, we are talking about the Bucs, who gave up 30 points or more in seven games last year. The Bucs were 10th in the NFL, but they struggled to rush the passer and play defense. Their 26 points allowed per game was 26th in the NFL.

Admittedly, the Bucs tried to shore up their defense in both free agency and the draft, but was it enough to the best team? In history?

"Yeah, I'm going to say it. Put it on me. I'm going to say it," he said. "NFL history, Bucs history, anything. That's just the type of attitude we have."

Write it off to enthusiasm. Granted, Noah Spence and Robert Ayers should help the pass rush. Brent Grimes and Vernon Hargreaves should help the coverage.

But best ever? Can you imagine that quote getting repeated by Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber and John Lynch? I would imagine they would think it was a precious little quote.

Now show them.

Yeah. Like Evan Longoria stating last year and this year that the Rays are a good team. Believe anything professional athletes and coaches say at your peril.
